Keep Blooming!

Finally, not a moment too soon, it is starting to seem like summer is just around the corner. The peonies are in full bloom, hydrangeas about to pop and the roses are raising their faces to greet the sun. Late spring is my favorite season, mainly because of the abundance of fresh flowers in bloom.

For me, nothing brightens up a room like a beautiful bouquet, bonus if the flowers have a lovely scent. What I don't love about fresh flowers?? Their relatively short lifespan. Recently, I went on a hunt to discover flower preservation techniques and have the best for you today!

  • Whether you purchase the flowers, are given them as a gift or pick freshly from your garden be sure to cut off any leaves that fall below the water line.
  • Fill the vase with lukewarm water.
  • Add just a few (tiny) drops of bleach to the water, this will prevent that nasty slime that often forms at the base.
  • While you sleep, place the flowers in a cool room to rest as well. This will help extend the lifespan of your favorite blooms!

Our peonies are about to bloom. I'm pretty avid about no leaves below the water line since that ring that forms just doesn't come out. I cut the stems again on the second day and change the water. I use a few drops of rubbing alcohol in the water.

Great tips, BHL! Have you tried using white wine vinegar on those nasty rings (if they do happen to form)? It works well when combined with a scrub brush.
